MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY HIRES DEWAYNE WICKHAM AS DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION’S NEW CHAIRPERSON
(Maryland, Baltimore) Tuesday, September 04, 2012: President David Wilson announced DeWayne Wickham as Morgan State University’s new Chairperson of the communications department. Wickham was recruited to create the new school for global communications and journalism. He is a well-known journalist most noted for his work on the Watergate trial, The Nelson Mandela tour in 1992, and Jean Bertrand Aristide’s return from exile. During his tenure at Morgan, Wickham plans to widen the opportunities available to students within the communications department.
DeWayne Wickham is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He attended four high schools before he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1964. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism from the University of Maryland and a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Baltimore. Wickham has an extensive career in journalism that began in 1972 when he served as an Intern for the Baltimore Evening Sun. Since then, he has worked with news organizations including the U.S. News and World Report, Black Enterprise, Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Evening Sun, CBS News, USA Today, and BlackAmericaWeb.com. DeWayne Wickham is a recipient of numerous awards including the Award of Special Merit from the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, The Community Service award and The Outstanding Commentary award from the Association of black Journalist, and he was named a “Fellow of The Society” by The Society of Professional Journalist.
The communication department’s new appointee will bring about great change within the near future. DeWayne Wickham took the position in July of 2012 but he has plans to extend the department by the next school year. He was quoted saying, “My focus as the new Communication Studies Department Chairman will be upon creating a new School of Global Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University.” This will be a great advancement for the communications department and for Morgan because the University currently has 9 schools of study.
Morgan State University, a coeducational institution, is located in a residential section of Baltimore, Maryland. The campus covers an area of more than 143 acres. The University offers a comprehensive range of academic programs through the doctorate. Morgan is also a founding member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
